This year, we're honored to back PMMC, a leader in marine mammal rescue, rehabilitation and ocean stewardship. Located in Laguna Beach, California, PMMC has been working tirelessly to protect and care for our ocean’s vulnerable creatures, while also educating the public on the importance of a healthy and sustainable ocean.
About Pacific Marine Mammal Center
PMMC is dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation and release, primarily of pinnipeds, including seals and sea lions. Unlike dolphins and whales, these animals can come ashore to rest, and they often do so when they are sick, injured, or malnourished. PMMC’s trained staff is adept at recognizing when these marine mammals need help, whether they're suffering from infections, malnourishment, entanglement, or other threats jeopardizing their survival.
But PMMC's mission goes beyond just rescue. They’re deeply involved in medical research, data collection, and advocacy to promote better ocean health. Every rescue is a chance to learn, and the data they collect helps inform their ongoing research and conservation efforts. By studying these animals and their environment, they can better understand the challenges facing marine life and develop strategies to protect our oceans.
What PMMC does
Rescue and rehabilitate
PMMC’s core mission starts with rescuing animals in distress. Once they’re brought to the facility, the team provides essential medical care to nurse them back to health. When the animals are ready, they’re released back into the wild, stronger and healthier.
Disentangle
Marine debris, especially fishing gear, is one of the biggest threats to marine mammals. PMMC works to free animals that have become entangled, while also collecting data on the types of debris that are causing harm. This information is crucial for advocating for cleaner, safer oceans.
Provide expertise
PMMC collaborates with environmental agencies across the nation to share their knowledge and expertise. Their efforts help shape policies and practices that benefit marine mammals far beyond the shores of Laguna Beach.
